Thomas started the weekend with a big grin on his face, setting the fastest time out of the Brits, and also ending Friday as the fastest wildcard rider. Although we have been to Brands Hatch before, Thomas had only ridden the “Indy Circuit”, so he had to learn the new Grand Prix circuit whilst familiarising himself with the Honda 250 Moriwaki Cup machinery. Free Practice proved that Thomas’ homework had paid off, finishing the session in 4th, only one second behind the session leader. From Thomas’ feedback the team made some adjustments to the bikes setup before Qualifying 1. Thomas finished the session in 5th overall, feeling confident about what he could do for the Saturday!
Qualifying 2 of the weekend brought more adjustments but Thomas was happy with the changes the team had made and ended the session in 3rd place, a front row start. The first race went well with Thomas getting a good start, he lead for the initial laps before dropping back a few places, Thomas worked his way back through the group of riders battling for the lead and on the last lap overtook 3 riders through the lap to finish the race in 2nd place overall.
“I love the bike! Really pleased with the times we have achieved so far, I enjoyed Brands last time round, but the GP circuit is even better and feels great on a Grand Prix bike. The racing is tough and I have learnt a lot from the weekend so far! I’m looking forward to tomorrow where hopefully we can get a win!”
Sunday warm-up was wet and as Thomas had a good setup with the bike he was happy with a third place lap time. The race was delayed but once it got going Thomas got a great start and lead for 6 out of 8 laps, unfortunately on lap 9 Thomas was involved in an incident involving two other riders. Thomas broke his arm in 3 places and dislocated his wrist, which put him out for the rest of the weekend.
Thomas is now recovering well and has started his recovery to full strength hopefully returning to his racing soon.
